Did you hear that? It’s the sound of a new meme taking the internet by storm.
Users over on X / Twitter are tirelessly replacing the dialogue of pivotal pop culture moments with a singular phrase: “Mama, kudos for saying that, for spilling.”
The mantra comes from the latest season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. In the most recent episode that aired on Friday (March 15), one contestant, Q, revealed she was HIV-positive. Another contestant, Plane Jane, replied to Q’s honesty with, “Mama, kudos for saying that. For spilling.” The disjointed response immediately stirred conversation among Drag Race fans online.
One user posted a screenshot of the scene to the reality TV show’s subreddit on Friday with the caption, “Plane’s response is so unserious 🤣.” The post received over 2,500 upvotes and 184 comments.
By Sunday, the phrase reached a wider audience on X and morphed into a meme. Users replicated Plane Jane’s odd reply by adding the dialogue over emotionally resonant scenes from popular TV shows and movies. It’s used on scenes that have already been endlessly analyzed and meme-d before, from the types of media the Extremely Online obsesses over.
One user replaced the dialogue in the Fleabag scene in which the Hot Priest tells Fleabag “I love you” (“It will pass”) with “Mama, kudos for saying that. For spilling.” Another added it to a screenshot of the scene in Call Me By Your Name where Elio’s father accepts his sexuality and encourages him to feel his pain deeply.
Others changed the phrasing up a bit to fit with the scene at hand. For example, one user wrote, “I just wanna give you some kudos for spilling” over the “I just want to take one more look at you” screenshot of A Star is Born.
Barbie, Little Women, Titanic, Midsommar, Oppenheimer, Mad Men, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Brokeback Mountain also received the “Mama, kudos for saying that. For spilling” treatment.
It’s only a matter of time before it comes for your favorite film’s gut-wrenching moment…and your group chat.
