UN security council votes to demand immediate ceasefire in Gaza

Resolution passes after US abstains in significant break with Israel, as hopes raised for breakthrough in hostage negotiations

The UN security council voted to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for the first time since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, after the US dropped a threat to veto, in a significant break with the Israeli government, bringing it to near total isolation on the world stage.

Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, alleged the US had “abandoned its policy in the UN today”, giving hope to Hamas of a truce without giving up its hostages, and therefore “harming both the war effort and the effort to release the hostages”.
