Wonder how the team behind The Marvels was able to create the film’s many space-based environments? Then check out this exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from the making of the film.
In the clip, Director of Photography Sean Bobbitt and Visual Effects Supervisor Tara DeMarco discuss how The Marvels makes use of technology known as the Volume. Created by visual effects company Industrial Light & Magic, a Volume is a soundstage made up of LED screens that display a particular scene’s backdrop. Originally used for The Mandalorian, the technology has since been implemented in projects like The Batman and House of the Dragon.
For The Marvels, the Volume allowed production to project scenes of nebulas, new planets, and the vast reaches of space onto Captain Marvel’s (Brie Larson) spaceship. “The Volume screens are just the greatest thing ever, and you can actually see what you’re supposed to see and not just a green screen,” Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani says in the clip.
The Marvels will be available for purchase Jan. 16 on Prime Video, Apple TV+, and Vudu; the film will arrive on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on Feb. 13.
